Costs

Who owns the house?
It belongs to one of the residents. The rent that members contribute goes directly toward mortgage and utility payments.
How do the utilities work?
Each month's rent includes a flat fee ($48) based on annual utility averages. This means that each resident pays one sixth of the average cost for heat, electricity, local telephone, and wireless Internet fees.
How do you decide rent?
The rent is based on the square footage of each room. It ranges from $495 for a smaller bedroom to $545 for a larger one. With the $48 each for utilties the totals run from $543 to $593 a month.
Does this include food?
No; we pay for food separately through the house food kitty. Each of us contributes $25 per week for ordinary groceries and house supplies (light bulbs, paper products and so on).
Are there other costs?
That depends on residents. Sometimes we decide to pool funds for special celebrations, or to buy a shared subscription for the household.
Who pays for long-term items, like kitchen equipment?
With six residents we tend to be very well supplied! For example, we currently have three sets of flatware, five ironing boards, etc. However, tools like rakes and shovels for standard household maintenance are the responsibility of the householder.
What about repairs?
We do all the work that we can ourselves. We share in the labor, just as we share in the benefit to the house, but the householder pays for supplies like paint, plaster, and so on that stay with the house. Specialty jobs like plumbing or electrical work that require a contractor are the responsibility of the householder.
Does Arlington Friends House run for profit?
No; the community only subsidizes part of the actual cost of the house.
